About

As a child, I was brought up on a variety of fresh, wholesome foods. If I happened to be unwell, I would be fed healing foods and broths. My father would make me drink a concoction made with roots or seeds of medicinal plants. If I made a fuss, which was often, he would tell me to hold my nose and drink it in one go. Whilst they didn’t always taste great, they must have done me good as I was an active child with a love of being out on my chopper bike.

When I became a teenager, life changed. Dinners at home were healthy, but at school, my friends and I visited the corner shop every lunchtime and on the way home from school. At the age of 19 I was ten kilograms heavier than I should have been so I started crash dieting. I knew the calorie content of all foods by heart - the problem was the quality of the calories I ate as snacks, which consisted mainly of processed foods and sugar. By 21 my lifestyle and eating habits changed, and the weight naturally dropped off.

Over time, I became interested in healthy eating. I found myself searching for information, but grew increasingly frustrated and overwhelmed by the contrasting ‘facts’ and misinformation in the media.

Nutrition and a healthy lifestyle became a big part of my life in my 40's, and that’s why I decided to study it – I wanted to understand the science so I could separate fact from fiction. Food is our fuel, our medicine, and our pleasure - we should choose it wisely.
